The American Express Platinum Card, and the Gold Card for that matter, have long been staples of the traveling jet set. With travel off the table for many cardholders, the luxury travel cards are pivoting to perks that can be enjoyed now, and in some ways, the cards are now better than ever before. Amex Bonus Points And Food Credits
People add credit cards to their wallet for the long term benefits, and also for the delicious welcome bonuses which fuel travel. Right now, Amex is offering literally delicious perks to entice new cardmembers, on top of the points, in partnership with Resy.
New Platinum Card sign ups via Resy can enjoy 20% back on dining, including take out in the form of statement credits up to $300 – aka money off your next monthly bill. That’s on top of the 60,000 American Express Membership Rewards Points earned for $5,000 in spending in the first three months and usual perks.
For the Gold Card, it’s up to $250 in dining rebates, plus 35,000 points and usual card perks, which include 4X on dining and a separate $120 annual dining credit. That’s correct, it’s $370 in dining credits in the first year on a $250 annual card.
These offers are quite cool, because they’re better than the current offers from Amex alone. And to crush the sales pitch vibe, we get nothing from these deals whatsoever. They’re just really good.
Think about the Platinum Card, specifically…
In addition to airport lounge access, including American Express Centurion Lounges, Amex Platinum Cardholders already get up to $200 a year in Uber credits, $200 annual airline fee credits, and $100 at Saks, with 5X points earning on key spending across travel like hotels and flights. Plus, you get Marriott Gold and Hilton Gold thrown in too, plus a few other travel perks.
The Amex Platinum does comes with a chewy $550 annual fee, but via the $200 in Uber credits, $200 in annual airline fee credits and $100 at Saks, PLUS the $300 back with the 20% rebate on food purchases, you can come out quite a bit ahead. Plus, you’d have 60,000 more points, which is nice.
Oh, and if you don’t already have Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, the card covers $100 for that fee as well.
The special Resy x Amex offer only offers that extra $300 on Platinum or $250 on Gold for the first year, and the money hits your account as a statement credit. Basically, if you get take out, delivery, or do something crazy like go out to dinner and spend $100, you’d get $20 back. If you spent $200, you’d get $40 back. You can do this all year, until you reach the $300 back threshold.

These perks make the card incredibly easy to justify in the first year, and with the travel benefits, plus other fee credit Amex has rolled out to help cardmembers during these times, like wellness perks including discounts on home workout gear, next year should be easy too.
Plus, if we can’t travel by next summer when your second annual fee would be due and travel perks will be useful again, this might be the least of our problems.
