Business or first for less? Always interested. American Airlines is offering their most generous sale to date, where you can buy enough miles for some extraordinary flights at incredible discounts and it officially ends TODAY. It’s not for everyone and it’s not necessarily cheap, but for some, it is brilliant. Buying miles is an excellent way to hedge your bets on flights you plan to take, in cabins you may not have expected to afford, by buying miles at a rate far less than a paid ticket would cost. If for example you wish to fly the Etihad First apartment from either New York or London to Abu Dhabi, doing so with miles in this sale will likely save you a significant fortune, if space is available on your dates. Find space, buy miles, book flights. The same applies with Cathay Pacific, JAL, Qatar and all the other top notch airlines you can redeem your American Airlines miles with. Here are some examples of one way costs…

Etihad First Class APARTMENT London to Abu Dhabi: $982 One Way.

Japan Airlines Sky Suite New York to Tokyo: $1,139 One Way.

Cathay Pacific First Class Hong Kong to Bangkok: $854 One Way.

American Airlines Business Class USA To Australia: $1298 One way.

Thinking out loud, this is a great opportunity, but as the wise points and miles gurus you’re becoming, you must also always consider the opportunity cost. If the cost from buying miles brings a ticket to $2,000 round trip and the outright cash price is $5,000, it’s a no brainer. On the other hand, if the difference is say $2,000 or $2,250, you must remember that by using miles, you miss out on earning miles or elite status credit, which can be worth far more than $250. The sale ends today so get the calculator out, figure out if you could use the miles wisely before the devaluation in March, yes you only need to book, not fly before then to lock in the good rates. Happy hunting.
