Qantas operates the not so secret best flight between New York and Los Angeles. There’s just one catch: you must be traveling internationally to take it. The airline has long offered this special flight to connect Australian passengers with New York City, after a quick stop in Los Angeles en route. For years the flight has been operated by a Boeing 747, known as the Queen of The Skies, but the route will now switch to a state of the art Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Who

Qantas is excited by their 787 Dreamliner deliveries. The airline is quickly rostering these new planes onto an expanded array of international routes, to showcase their new stuff. Qantas will launch the first ever regularly scheduled commercial service between Europe and Australia with a 787 Dreamliner this year.

What

Qantas will use their Boeing 787 Dreamliner to replace the current Boeing 747 which operates the continuing flight onto New York’s JFK Airport. The flight will operate flight numbers 11, 12 to New York respectively, after arriving in Los Angeles from Brisbane. Passengers from all other Qantas flights from Melbourne and Sydney can book onto this flight, to continue their journey.

When

The Dreamliner will begin service September 1st, 2018. A second seasonal flight will be added from Brisbane to Los Angeles as well. The second flight will become full time at the end of 2018 when the next Dreamliner is delivered from the Boeing Factory in Seattle.

Why It Matters

The new Qantas Dreamliner features their very best business class seat and a better passenger experience in all cabins, thanks to improved air quality and pressure. The plane is also smaller than the Boeing 747, which can be nice. The airline eventually hopes to serve New York with a direct flight to Australia.

How would you feel about a direct flight from New York to Australia?

  1. “best flight between LAX and New York” is a bit of an overstatement. Their seats do not have all-aisle access seats, their planes do not have wifi, they do not have first class.
