Korean Airlines, of all things offers this exceptionally good rate and allows you to travel on Air France, KLM, Alitalia or Delta while redeeming their miles. Yes, for 80,000 miles, which you would transfer from Chase Sapphire Preferred to Korean Airlines, you will get a round trip Business Class flight from anywhere in the US to anywhere in Europe on one of those great airlines.
Air France, Delta, Alitalia, Korean and KLM are all part of the Sky Team Alliance. As part of this alliance they allow you to redeem miles for flights on their partners. I have no plans of going to Korea or flying Korean Airlines, but using their miles would save me a fortune versus the rates charged by Delta and others. Delta, a transfer partner of American Express, would require 125,000 miles for the same trip in business and 60,000 for the same trip in coach. Adding insult to injury, those rates are becoming increasingly hard to find and often go for multiples more to people who don’t read this blog 😉 Astounding! By using Korean Airlines miles, you are exploiting a sweet spot in their award program to save miles while experiencing great partner products.
Who wouldn’t want to fly Business Class on Air France’s A380 from New York to Paris. My personal strategy would be to grab a Chase Sapphire Preferred and a Chase Freedom. Why the Freedom? The card has no annual fee and comes with 10,000 or 20,000 points depending on time of year. Those points can only be used for cash back unless you have a Sapphire Preferred, in which case you can transfer them to an airline partner such as Korean. With the two together you would be at 60,000 or 70,000 points very quickly with only 10,000 to go to book your European luxe vacation. Get on it while the value is there!
