There’s simply nothing quite like the gift of travel. Those that know me personally, know that I hate “stuff”. It makes me one of the most irritating people to shop for, and makes any presents a nerve racking task. Any gesture anyone makes to commemorate an occasion is beautiful, but I really do believe that the gift of travel is just unmatched.

I’m not saying you need to go out and spend a fortune on people. A map or Lonely Planet guide can be the catalyst for something memorable – an inspiration for exploring. Today is my birthday and I am having the best time. I flew from London to Prague this morning – and got a warm happy birthday and a little treat on the plane. There’s nothing like flying on your birthday. But knowing that I was headed to a place I’d never been before is what really excited me.

I’ve spent time in many parts of Europe, but I never made it to Prague. My wife Laura surprised me with a British Airways vacations package, which are extremely good value including flights, with checked bag and hotel, which today is the Intercontinental Prague. It’s not even noon yet, and I’ve gotten to experience the marvel of flight, the magic of a new city and the beauty of discovery. As much as I adore an ironic t-shirt, it just doesn’t compare. The memories I make here, in the air and (in the bar) will last a lifetime. “Stuff” just doesn’t.

As a side note, I’d like to say thanks to all the people that are reading this. I never wanted a real job and I don’t think I’ll ever have one thanks to you. This morning, right as I woke up – we broke another monthly website traffic record. I hope we can continue to amuse, excite and save you money. After all, there’s nothing in the world like the gift of travel.

Thanks for being here. Where are you going next?
